Sunlight

ZZ plants prefer bright indirect light or no sunlight (Or natural light). Therefore, these plants are well-suited for indoors. If placed under direct sunlight, it may result in scorching of the leaves.

Watering

Once in 2 weeks

ZZ plants can survive even in infrequent watering as they are grown as drought-tolerant. However, the plants should be watered whenever you find the soil dried up. Check the wetness of the soil by immersing your finger at least 2 inch deep in the soil.  It is also important NOT to water the plant excessively, as it may result in root decay. The plants survive the best when not watered, rather than watering excessively. In ZZ plants, you can find bulb-like structures called rhizomes at the bottom of the plant, which is capable of storing water for its survival. With this reason, ZZ plants can go months without water.

Potting Mix

A mix of powdered dry cow dung, soil and sand (in 1:1:1 proportion) can function as an ideal potting mix for ZZ plants. You may also add a lighter amount of perlite and neem cake (Just 1 spoon of each would do) to your potting mix. Vermi compost is also a good addition to the potting mix for ZZ plants.

Common issues and Solutions

Yellowing of leaves or brown spots are some of the major issues with ZZ plants. There are 3 reasons for this condition. One is sunlight, secondly excessive watering and the third reason could be the lack of proper drainage in the plant pot. Therefore, it is advisable to keep the plant from direct sunlight, and from overwatering. If drainage is the issue, you may try repotting the plant and save the roots from rotting due to the continuous moisture at the bottom. Curling of leaves is another most commonly seen issue with ZZ plants. This is an indication of excess light exposure. As a solution, you may replace the plant to a shadier place. In addition, if you find any dust on the leaf surfaces, you may carefully clean the surface using a damp cotton cloth.

Propagation

You can propagate the plant through leaf cuttings (in water) or through petiole cutting (in soil). If you are considering propagating the plant through leaf cuttings, cut and take the leaf which is close to the petioles. The lower ends of detached leaves are inserted into the container with water. Change the water once every 3 to 4  days. Fresh water adds much to its faster growth. It may take around 50 to 55 days for the new roots and rhizomes to form.

Potting and Repotting

Once the plants have outgrown the pots, you may consider it as an indicator for repotting. While dividing the plant for repotting, remember to remove the soil completely from the plant and untangle the roots carefully. For placing the new plants, always remember to choose a wide mouthed, shallow pot having enough drainage holes at the bottom. And layer the bottom of the pot with a few metals so as to avoid any possible blockage of drainage holes.
